Nature teaches us a lot about life. Trees and birds in the sky exist for a purpose. The sea and ocean have their lessons for us too. It is where ‘Salt’ comes into today’s story.
I hope this story will resonate or help some of you, especially those who are disappointed with people.
And this resonates with my experience in Yemen when I was also a cook in the kitchen.
Until today, a female Yemeni As-Seggef who loves to eat always ensures the plain rice is not tasteless. She does not like bland rice, unlike the Asians.
Whenever I am cooking, I keep remembering her voice saying, “More salt, Ya Nor. More salt.”
I smile while cooking my noodle soup today. Asians do not understand why she seems to love salt so much. It can cause high blood pressure. Doesn’t it? Perhaps if you are in the dervish monastery, you will know the reasons.
If nature teaches you something about life, so do your food ingredients.
Be aware of what you put into the pot you are cooking. Each ingredient has its wisdom or story.
This story comes from history. There are series of episodes about it — Mavera.
A student of Shaykh Yusuf Hemedani was appointed to enter Baghdad when the city was full of corruption. He was known as Ahmet Hace. With him, 3 other companions, and among them an Usta.
[ Usta is called upon a person who is expert in a certain field, at the same time he is older than the main leader of the group, thus being called as Usta, as a form of respect.]
Salt…
Too much salt makes the food saltish. Too little salt and the food taste bland. Cooks know the just nice amount to add. You have to balance it well. Not too much. Not too little.
It is the same for everything on Earth. Everything is in balance. Not too much or too little of everything. Just nice.
People come and go. The sun and moon move with the stipulated timing. Spring, autumn, summer, and winter are all arranged at a specific time. Your canned food has its expiry date. One day, you will also pass away to another realm.
All things have been stated and written with their due. Everything has its term written.
When you have emotional problems with people, remember the Salt. Too much or too little give you a good lesson. People will come and go, including your fam. So, do not put an expectation on them. I guarantee you will be disappointed if you put expectation on others.
For example:
People come when they can benefit something from us. People go once what they need is fulfilled. Maybe we did the same to others, unaware. But if you have not been like that and yet it happens to you, please do not run after them in desperation. Learn from the salt.
The salt is the ingredient of wisdom that reminds me to balance my emotions and feelings towards people. They will come and go. If everything in the universe has its due, so do we as human beings.
Do you think this World will suffer without us? Do I think God suffers without me? As a Muslim, if I do not believe that God exists anymore, it will not lessen the power of God by any percent. Allah will not be bankrupt.
So, practice keeping our hearts in the right balance. Not too close to anyone and not ghosting away into thin air. You will feel lighter that way.
As everything is with its due, it is called Time.
A man named Shamsuvar, who lived in Sazlik District, nearest to the city of Baghdad, once told Usta that he was not ready to walk the journey of wisdom and faith. He felt the Usta put the dervish turban and belt on him.
Usta did not pressure him. Remember, there is no force in believing. His reminder was simple:
There is Time for everything. Time for turban. Time for the belt. — Source to watch: Mavera
When the time comes, you will be what you are meant to be. Slowly but surely. Everything is with its due.
You will reap what you sow. You will also heal.
I write these to remind myself 1st to train my inner child and disallow the inner voice to overpower myself.
The next time you sprinkle salt into your dish, I hope for you to remember this story. And remember me in your good prayers too.
I thank you for taking the time to visit and read me.
