First, you are brave to write about the Asian style - where yours mentioned as Indian families - and mine is a mixed of confusion.

What you experienced is no less than what I am brought up from my mom's side as her father was an Indian. She claimed it but as much as I remember, there was nothing resembling Indian about my late grandfather except probably one of the ancestors were.

Whatever it was, the same cultural or practice like you mentioned here applied to my life too. Till today. It caused me a lot of stress, pressure and unhappiness.
